As we all know, Windows 11 got its first Patch Tuesday Upgrade a few hours ago, and although it’s not a big update, given that the OS just began rolling out in a phased fashion over a week ago, it’s still a welcome addition.
This latest version seems to address just a few compatibility problems while not adding any new ones.
However, if you still believe the update installed faster than anticipated, Microsoft has now given additional information about how this was achieved.
Let’s find out what this is all about together, shall we?
Before we get into what has changed in Windows 11’s maintenance model, it’s essential to talk about why the change was made in the first place, as well as the current service model.
We can all agree that Windows is a widely utilized operating system in a number of settings across the world.
This is especially true in this hybrid environment, where everyone may not have the best internet connections but still has to be protected by security updates.
This is why patch sizes must be minimal, particularly because monthly cumulative updates include all previously published changes.

In Windows 11, Microsoft used a technique called reverse update data creation to drastically alter this procedure.
The mapping works by disassembling the program’s assembly code byte by byte and finding the virtual addresses. When assembly code is updated with a fix, virtual addresses correspond logically to entry points for assembly code functions and shift. The delta engine detects these shifts and records them in a mapping database. The mapping procedure on delta apply normalizes the addresses of these modifications and is a big reason why current delta algorithms are so efficient.
It seems to be a straightforward and intuitive method in that it observes the delta instructions and then reverses them without going through the paired delta reverse pass.
However, on the backend, this is a major modification that makes use of a mapping table to map the resulting changes in assembly code functions.
These transformations, like the fundamental patching instructions, may be “watched” and reversed. Because not all mappings are 1:1, there is a small overhead, and when forward mapping disagrees with its observed reverse mapping, extra patch instructions must be utilized to align the mapping. This may be done in-place, and the reverse mapping will perform almost as well as a reverse delta with a direct mapping from a server-generated delta.
Officials from Redmond say that their reverse update data generation method has reduced the size of Windows 11 updates by 40%.
The Redmond firm claims to have submitted a patent application for this technique a few months ago. It’s unclear if Microsoft will also backport this method to Windows 10.
